Arachnida is a class within the subphylum Chelicerata. Two primary characteristics of arachnids are that they have eight legs, and no antennae or wings. They are not considered insects--insects have six legs, two antennae, and usually wings, and are classified in the separate subphylum Hexapoda. Two well-known types are spiders and scorpions
